The annual IFA electronics show in Berlin was unusually good for physical-product ideas this year. The standout devices were not just another round of boxes with an AI logo; several changed the physical behavior of familiar categories.
Lenovo’s ThinkBook Project Swan↗ uses a horizontally expanding OLED display. Lexar’s Muse SSD↗ pushes portable storage toward an ultrathin magnetic form. Aurzen↗ showed folding projector hardware, Philips Hue introduced the 360-degree Liane rope light↗, and iRobot’s Roomba Duo adds a separate miniature cleaner for spaces the main robot cannot enter.
The common thread is mechanical novelty. Expanding screens, magnetic modules, folding optics and secondary robots are all attempts to solve a physical limitation instead of merely adding another software feature. That makes this group especially useful as a maker/design reference: each product starts with a constraint you can see and touch.
Project Swan is interesting because display size has traditionally been fixed at purchase. A mechanically expanding panel reframes the laptop as a device whose working area can change with context. Whether that particular concept succeeds is less important than the design question it opens: what other desktop tools could physically reconfigure when you need more space?
The Roomba Duo is another good example. Instead of making the main robot ever more complicated, it delegates a job the large chassis is bad at to a smaller companion. That is a surprisingly general design pattern for robotics: one machine does not have to be shaped for every task if a coordinated secondary device can handle the exceptions.
That is why IFA earned space in Wake Up today. These are not necessarily all products D should buy. They are a compact collection of ideas worth stealing from: variable geometry, modular accessories, specialized helper devices and products that solve a physical problem in a visually obvious way.
