Wildfire news usually arrives as acreage, evacuations and smoke maps. Indonesia’s current fire season is worth looking at through another unit: carbon.

Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service data cited by Reuters estimates 19.7 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions from Indonesian fires between September 1 and 7. That was the highest national fire-emissions total in the world and more than ten times Russia’s level during the same period.

The number was 273% above Indonesia’s seasonal average. The fires are concentrated heavily in Kalimantan on Borneo and in Sumatra, where a super-El Niño has contributed to extreme heat and drought.

Satellite hotspot counts underline the acceleration. Reuters reports 13,443 hotspots from August 1 through September 8 — already more than the comparable period in the infamous 2015 fire season.

Peat makes the measurement problem worse. Drained tropical peat can burn beneath the surface for long periods, releasing enormous amounts of carbon and particulate pollution. Because some of that combustion is obscured from satellites, experts warn the true burned area and emissions can be underestimated.

Pontianak in West Kalimantan reached a hazardous air-quality index of 394. The environmental consequence is therefore not an abstract climate ledger; it is also a direct respiratory emergency for people downwind.

The fire season could intensify through October. This is a good reminder that extreme climate events can become both local disasters and globally meaningful emissions sources at the same time.
