One of today’s best Atlanta events requires almost no planning: the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra↗ returns to Piedmont Park↗ at 7:30 p.m. for a free outdoor performance on Oak Hill.
The program is built around Atlanta’s “City in the Forest” identity. It opens in the pastoral direction with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, includes Judith Weir’s Forest, moves through Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and features violinist Lauren Roth-Gómez in “Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Smetana’s Die Moldau is also on the program.
Assistant Conductor Finan Jones leads the orchestra, with Mara Davis as emcee. The ASO says admission is free and tickets are not required; food trucks and family activities will be available.
The one logistical instruction worth following is to arrive early. Seating with a good stage view is first-come, first-served, and this is exactly the kind of pleasant Atlanta event that can become less pleasant if you spend the first half circling for a place to sit.
The forecast helps. NWS has Atlanta sunny today with a high near 91 and partly cloudy tonight around 71, with no meaningful rain concern in the metro forecast. A picnic blanket, water and an early arrival should be enough.
If Irene is free and the mood fits, this is one of those inexpensive date nights where the environment does most of the work.
